Covid-19 is part of a large family of viruses that cause illnesses on a spectrum from the common cold to more diseases e.g. Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome(MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome(SARS-CoV). This novel coronavirus (COVID-19), is a new viral strain never previously identified in humans.
What are the symptoms of Coronavirus?
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are:
Fever e.g Temp>37.5
Breathing difficulties and/or shortness of breath
Fatigue or Tiredness
Who is at most risk of coronavirus?
Overseas travellers and close contacts
Elderly or have pre-existing medical conditions
Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people
How can I slow/prevent the spread of coronavirus?
Frequently clean your hands with regular handwashing with soap, alcohol sanitiser
Cover your cough with the bend of your elbow or tissue
Maintain a distance of 1.5m
Do I need to wear a mask?
As per WHO(World Health Organisation), Federal and State guidelines, you are only required to wear a mask if you are unwell with COVID-19 symptoms e.g. coughing, fever, etc. OR looking after a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 individual.
If you are NOT unwell or looking after a suspected or confirmed individual, then you are wasting a mask. Currently there is a global shortage of surgical masks, and all authorities request appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment(PPE) to ensure Healthcare workers are able to utilise them when needed.
Extra TEC Measures, to ensure your safety:
Body Temperature Screening. Everyone attending the hospital must have their body temperature screened every time they enter the Day Hospital. The body temperature screening is quick, minimally invasive and a very useful way of identifying anyone that has a fever. Please be kind and supportive of the staff who have been requested to undertake these roles.
Screening Questions. Everyone entering the Centre will be asked the following questions:
– Have you returned from overseas (any country) within the last 14 days?
– Have you been in close contact with a person with confirmed COVID-19 during the 14 days prior to visiting this facility?
– Do you have a fever or respiratory illness like symptoms? (cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, rapid breathing, a sore throat, or a runny nose, with or without fever).If you answer YES to any of these questions, please DO NOT come to the Centre and present to your GP or nearest Emergency DepartmentWe appreciate your assistance and understanding with this matter.
Infection control and hand hygiene will be enforced and promoted throughout our Centres
Visitors. Only one accompanying care/support individual is permitted to enter the centre. It is recommended that the patient be dropped off at the entrance and that only one adult/carer to enter the facility for pick up.
